I've been telling people to "work on stuff that matters." By that I mean that technologists need to stop thinking about making their fortune on the consumer Internet, and instead focus on applying their skills to working on the world's great problems. We need to apply "Web 2.0" mindset to problems like energy (think "smart grid" for example), government ("open, transparent, and accountable"), health care, education, and so on. This is not just idealism. In the economic environment we've got today, it's where the money will be made: solving real problems that have an impact in the real world.
